WEST GYMNASIUM (ΧYSTO) A Hellenistic gymnasium that got its name by the athletes' habit of putting oil on themselves which they scraped after the end of the games (Χysto in Greek means scratched). It is almost certain the largest in Kos, whose north east part is still preserved (on Grigoriou 5th Avenue). The gymnasium's stadium had the size of a hectare. The gymnasium had a roof supported by 81 columns, 17 of which are still preserved. West of the colonnade a reservoir for swimming was built during Roman times.
